False rumors of complications from volcano eruptions

A spreading rumor of a possible tsunami attack has forced many residents in the Indonesian province of Lampung on Sumatra island to flee home early on Tuesday.

People in the provincial capital of Bandar Lampung in the eastern coast of Sumatra have asked neighbors using their telephones or mobile phones to leave home for an unconfirmed report that an undersea volcano eruption would likely trigger a tsunami, reported the Antara news agency.

Residents rushed in panic upon hearing the report and fled to the higher ground.

Local security officers later found that the reports of both tsunami and volcano eruptions turned out to be false.

In December last year, tsunami attack triggered by a powerful earthquake left more than 220,000 people dead or missing in the northern tip of the island.
