No volcano eruption for now
Clouds obscured Mount St. Helens on April 9 25 years ago, but, based on ashfall and the smell of sulfur, geologists believed three moderate eruptions took place.
Seismic activity beneath the mountain remained relatively low, except for four earthquakes greater than magnitude 4.
Most geologists believed the mountain had stabilized. Many U.S. Geological Survey scientists and U.S. Forest Service officials were returning to their normal duties.
Volcano news was bumped off the front pages of most local newspapers.
