Augustine volcano on red alert...again!
Mt. Augustine that began its eruptions last Friday was moved, Wednesday, from level orange back to level red by the Southwest Volcano Research Centre. An explosive eruption was reported to have begun Wednesday at 0758 AST and to have ended at 0803 AST.
Located approximately 180 miles from Anchorage, Mt. Augustine continues to belch ash and steam cloud plumes. At 13.7 km-high, USGS geologist Michelle Coombs said this latest eruption was “a little more energetic” than the last eight. The Mt.
